Memories of a piano man:<br /> Although had seen Pinetop perform with Muddy Waters at the age of 14 (the band included: Willie "Big Eyes" Smith -drums, Louis Myers -guitar, Jerry Portnoy -harmonica and Calvin Jones -bass), I never met him on a personal level until some years later when these same musicians had left Muddy Waters and formed The Legendary Blues Band. My band at the time (winter 1981) was The Back Alley John Revue and we were the opening act for this great blues band at a club in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada called Saikleys on South Bank St.. A terrible snow storm had rolled through that night and these guys had driven through a ferocious blizzard to make the gig, only to find that folks in town had not been as brave as they and subsequently the crowd was sparse. Unfortunately, due to the poor turn out, they were worried about getting paid and so refused to play after the first set unless they got paid in advance of each set. ( I was mighty impressed with this and still count it as one of my big early lessons in what has now been a 30 year plus career in music.) Nonetheless, the one set they did do was, for me, monumental. These guys, even without Muddy, were fantastic, laying down old school Chicago style blues with relentless shuffles (I was and still am a huge fan of Willie "Big Eyes" drumming & him and Calvin were the deal!) and a woven mosaic of intertwining lines all swinging along in a wave of emotion that thickened the air in the room making your head swim and carried you away to another place and time. I have only experienced this intensity of blues live a handful of times in my life. Although all the players were amazing and the band as a unit was unstoppable, it was Pinetop who stole my heart that night showing true passion for the music in his trademark infectious style, never overstating or show-boating but stating his voice and obviously loving what he did, doing it like no one else could. Man!<br /> After that first set, the band decided not to play anymore (wisely! the bar owner had a rep and they would not have been paid!) and I sat at the bar talking to Pinetop for at least a couple of hours, sipping drinks, smoking cigarettes and yacking about, check this, fishing! I sill remember that conversation clearly and although I won't bore you with detail suffice to say I do know his mother's recipe for catfish. He was such an easy going cat, no airs or ego, just down to earth good people and as a young man I was greatly impressed by this.<br /> I saw the Lengendary Blues Band many times after that, in many different cities and with many changes in the line up but would never have imagined on that first encounter with Pinetop that I would play with him in future years. What? Me play with the piano player that backed Muddy Waters?! That is exactly what happened. The first time I joined Pinetop as drummer was years later in 1993 at The King Eddy Hotel (Calgary's home of the blues) with Russel Jackson (B.B. King) on bass. I know now that he must have been near 80 years old but believe me, on stage he was like a kid! I told him the story of how we had met that snowy night years ago in Ottawa and was amazed he not only remembered the occasion but also remembered my name. He said he could never forget it because his fathers name was Sandy, Sandy Perkins and although I never corroborated this information I had no reason to doubt him and the fact remains, he remembered my name, always. The show that night was magic and I felt at times I was in a dream. He laid down such undeniable groove, paved such an obvious road, it seemed to me you couldn't possibly drive off it even if you were blind as a bat and three sheets to the wind. Every time I caught an arrangement or nailed a stop or grabbed and ending he'd turn his head a little and he'd glance back at me so I could see that impish grin of approval on his face, that grin that spurred me on and gave off the same pure joy or passion you'd expect from a five year old unwrapping his new red bicycle on Christmas morning. I was expecting, at his age and all, that it would be a short show... forget that! He was still playing away well passed last call when all the house lights had been turned on and the bar staff was cleaning up! The bar manager had to come to stage and discreetly tell him the night was over even though I knew he didn't really want to. Man! I do believe he would have played all night and damned if I wouldn't have kept playing with him.<br /> I didn't see Pinetop for a few years after that; I was living in Vancouver and I guess he hadn't been out that way for a while. Imagine my surprise when in September of 1995 I got a call from The Yale (Vancouver's premier blues bar to this day) saying that Pinetop was coming to town and had requested that I put a band together for him. I was blown away because I didn't really expect to have the honour of performing with him again. I brought in Robert Scrivens aka "Muddy Fraser" on guitar, Mitch Kashmar (who happened to be in town recording) on harp, and Jack Lavin (Powder Blues) on bass. What a show! Pinetop was in peak form again and had the house percolating all night long and even though he was now 82 he had gaggles of the prettiest girls you can imagine all dancing in front of him and not paying a tinkers damn to anyone else in the band. He had that charisma that just can't be dulled by time or age. In fact, he put out so much energy I had to ask him later that night how old he was. He said: "I'm older'n black pepper!". You sure wouldn't have known it. That night sticks out still as one of the most enjoyable nights of blues I've ever played. Pinetop managed to get the band playing off him in that old Chicago style of call and response by throwing out a lick and waiting for another to pick it up. When he heard it coming back to him he'd toss out another. It may sound simple but this style is something of a rarity these days and it is the sound I grew up listening to on Chess, Vanguard and Arhoolie records etc.. He also pays much tribute to melody which is another thing I love about his playing... I digress, back to the story. It was a truly magic couple of nights and I think we played well beyond our own expectations -I know I did- and I know it was because Pinetop brought it out in us. He just had this thing about him that put you at ease and brought the best out in you and your music; he made you listen. To top it all off, I had brought in a couple cassettes and gotten the sound man to record the night off the mixing board. I still have this recording and I tell you what: this is good stuff! Classic Pinetop and as good recording of live blues as you could hope to hear. I still listen to it at home and believe me I am seriously picky when it comes to what I will listen to when I want a "blues fix".<br /> This is far more than I intended to write when I sat down here, it's just that as I write, more and more memories keep popping into my head, like a film is running behind a curtain and periodically someone pulls it open to reveal another snippet of time. I hope you'll excuse me, I'll try and wrap it up here.<br /> Pinetop continued to call ahead whenever he was out this way and I was fortunate enough to play with him on several more occasions over the years. He made an indelible impression on me that started when I was a young wipper-snapper that has, by quirk of circumstance, lasted throughout my career to date. There's been a few times when I would hear word of his being sick or unwell and he once had to cancel a gig we had due to illness. I would worry but he would always come bouncing back, defying logic and reason, and seemed to be maintaining what I would call, considering his age, a rigorous itinerary. It would be my, and I suspect many musicians' dream to be able to play to the end. Pinetop not only did this but did it for longer than many of us will live and for my part, Pinetop, I salute you kind sir and know in my heart you're still playing for us somewhere.
